In the morning, Uther surveyed the troops.
It’d been two decades since he’d been in their place- arrayed in the uniform of Camelot’s finest and damn if he doesn’t feel like a bit of a traitor in his suit while they wear the gear. Two hours after they’re suppose to be gone; Uther is still shaking hands and exchanging names and jokes. These are the King’s finest, and when the first gun is fired, and bomb dropped- it will be them on the ground first. Uther makes a point of meeting each man’s eyes, and touching each shoulder as if the King’s blessing could ward away death and injury. Everyone seemed to believe it.
For a moment, even Uther himself seems to believe it and finally- when each man is promised something and smiled at and laughed with- the King gets into his car and pulls out the latest reports of Gilboa’s mobilization.
They’ll be the first out, and first dead. When Titus is put into his arms in the car (Gaius would be annoyed if he knew how favored the baby is) Uther starts telling him their names and apologies because in a few months he won’t remember them.
